PRACTICING 2D DIGITAL ART

2025-

After several challenging experiences working with freelance concept artists for my headline project, around summer 2025 I finally accepted that I was just going to have to hunker down and start making my own concept art and sketches. Frankly, I really should have realized this a long time ago, but having no experience with production workflows meant I completely overlooked the importance of visual development.

If this project is ever going to move at the pace I envision, there's no possible way I can do all of the work myself. In order to effectively direct other artists in manifesting my visual ideas, I must be able to show them exactly what I want, instead of relying on descriptions and references and mood boards and whatnot. It seems foolishly obvious in hindsight, but I had to learn the hard way that a picture is indeed worth a thousand words.

My principal interest remains in 3D, as that's the medium I still intend to use for the actual production. The goal here is efficiency, not to develop any particularly exemplary skill in 2D. Yet even though I've never seriously practiced drawing or painting before this, I've spent enough time with photography and 3D to have a somewhat decent eye for how things should look. I just have to figure out how to make the pen in my hand do what I see in my head.
